As we approach the 2024 Presidential Election, South Asian Americans stand at a pivotal moment in U.S. history. Our choice is clear: Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. As the first Indian American to serve as Vice President, Kamala Harris embodies values dear to us—pluralism, democracy, human rights, and equality. In contrast, Donald Trump’s immigration policies disproportionately harmed South Asians. His administration tightened restrictions on H-1B visas, which are widely used by Indian professionals. This created uncertainty for families and threatened to rescind the H-4 EAD rule, preventing spouses from working. Her advocacy extends beyond diplomacy. Harris has supported aid to India during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided humanitarian relief to South Asia, and stood up for human rights in the region. Her connection to India is personal and meaningful. At a South Asians for Biden event in 2020, she reflected on the historical ties between the civil rights movement in the U.S.As we look to 2024, the South Asian vote will be critical. Our community of nearly 5 million people will play a decisive role in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Kamala Harris understands our journey and represents our values.

But the proposed China-Vietnam rail lines, the completed China-Laos high-speed rail as well as the Thailand-China railway project and Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link - both backed by Beijing and under construction - are all viewed as steps towards that vision. While China has become Southeast Asia's biggest infrastructure financing partner, an estimated US$50 billion pledged by Beijing for funding in the region has gone unfulfilled, according to a study by the Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank.Southeast Asia is playing an ever-growing part in China's investment and diplomatic decisions, particularly as Beijing's rivalry with Washington heats up. In the third of a four-part series on China's ties with Asean, Orange Wang looks at how Beijing is using infrastructure to forge stronger links with the region.During the trip, China agreed to support a feasibility study for two standard-gauge railway projects and help in the planning of another one in the Southeast Asian country, inching it forward in updating its colonial-era railways so they can link with Chinese train lines.Citing the developments on the routes to Vietnam and Thailand, he said China's rail links with Southeast Asian countries had moved from nearly nothing before the China-Laos high-speed railway opened three years ago to "blossoming in multiple spots".

The U.S. national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said last year that Washington was not looking to create a NATO in the Indo-Pacific and this month Daniel Kritenbrink, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, said it was too early for such talk.On Sept. 21, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined U.S. President Joe Biden, Ishiba's predecessor Fumio Kishida and Australia's prime minister for a Quad summit at which they announced joint security steps in Asia's trade-rich waters in the face of growing challenges from China. He has called for the creation of an Asian NATO, the stationing Japanese troops on U.S.He argues that the changes would deter China from using military force in Asia.
Japan's new prime minister suggests an 'Asian NATO' concept for future regional deterrence, drawing skepticism from Asian nations. The idea is seen as a long-term vision rather than an immediate development, with China likely to strongly oppose it.
"It's difficult to immediately set up a mechanism that would impose mutual defence obligations in Asia, so it's more of a vision for the future."Asian nations have expressed skepticism and reticence in response to the call from Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who took up his post on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, Jaishankar noted that, unlike Japan, India has never been a treaty ally of another nation. Responding to questions regarding Ishiba's vision, Jaishankar remarked, "We don't have that kind of strategic architecture in mind."The EAM pointed out that India and Japan, together with the United States and Australia, are part of the Quad - an alliance formed to counterbalance China's growing influence in the region.Prime Minister Ishiba aims to strengthen alliances to address what he deems the most serious security threats Japan has faced since World War II. He has proposed the establishment of an Asian NATO, the stationing of Japanese troops on US soil, and shared control of US nuclear weapons as a deterrent against nuclear-armed neighbors such as China, Russia, and North Korea. The United States has dismissed the notion of an Asian NATO. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated last year that Washington was not interested in forming a NATO-like alliance in the Indo-Pacific. Earlier this month, Daniel Kritenbrink, the U.S.
